Roots of Resilience
Preserving Oregon's Heritage Trees for Climate and Communities
Roots of Resilience aims to protect and maintain heritage trees through community engagement, environmental education, and proactive conservation. We prioritize historically underserved communities, fostering both environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.
Program Goals
Comprehensive Tree Health Assessments
Certified arborists conduct detailed health assessments to identify risks such as pests, environmental stress, and wildfire vulnerability. Data-driven intervention plans ensure each tree’s long-term survival.
Intervention and Preservation
Targeted care, including pruning, pest control, soil treatments, and wildfire preparation, is provided for at-risk trees. All work is performed with landowner consent and community collaboration.Workforce Development
We offer paid internships for up to 12 community members from underserved areas. Interns gain hands-on experience in arboriculture, urban forestry, and environmental science, building skills for careers in the green industry.Community Engagement and Education
Educational workshops raise awareness about heritage trees’ cultural and ecological importance. Community members learn tree care best practices, while Title 1 schools use heritage trees as outdoor learning labs.
Collaboration and Documentation
Partnering with the Oregon Travel Information Council, we document heritage trees’ histories through GIS Storymaps, using LiDAR and multispectral imagery. These stories are shared publicly to inspire statewide conservation efforts.
WHt it matters
Heritage trees play a critical role in combating climate change by reducing urban heat, sequestering carbon, and enhancing air quality. They also serve as living historical markers, reflecting Oregon’s Indigenous and pioneer heritage. By protecting these trees, we preserve both environmental and cultural legacies.
