    What is Canopy IQ?

Canopy IQ is a groundbreaking initiative focused on strengthening urban forestry in disadvantaged communities across Southern Oregon. Funded through the Oregon Department of Forestry's Urban & Community Forestry Project, Canopy IQ leverages cutting-edge technology, workforce development, and community engagement to create healthier, more resilient urban environments.

The Mission: We aim to improve the environmental, social, and economic well-being of communities most affected by climate change. By planting and maintaining climate-resilient trees, we enhance urban canopy coverage, mitigate extreme heat, and improve air quality while fostering environmental stewardship.

  • How it works

    Data-Driven Insights

We use advanced technologies such as LiDAR, GIS mapping, and multispectral imaging to assess and monitor urban trees. This approach generates precise data on canopy growth, tree health, and environmental benefits.

    Tree Planting & Maintenance

We plan to plant 120 climate-resilient trees across three key environments: manufactured/mobile home parks, street tree corridors, and Title 1 K-12 schools. Trees receive tailored care, including mulching, pruning, and fertilization, ensuring long-term success.

    Community Engagement & Education

Through workshops, tree-planting events, and educational programs, we empower residents, students, and teachers to become environmental stewards.

    Workforce Development

Local interns gain hands-on experience in urban forestry, data collection, and arboriculture, developing valuable skills for careers in the green industry.

  • Why it matters

Increasing tree canopy helps reduce heat islands, improve air quality, and mitigate stormwater runoff, enhancing overall health and climate resilience. The program supports economic development by creating internships and training that generate job opportunities and stimulate local economic growth. Additionally, it promotes equity and environmental justice by targeting historically underserved communities, ensuring equitable access to the benefits of green infrastructure.
