• Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

As an organization deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEI), we understand the vital importance of embracing these principles in our work.

At OURCF, we recognize that rural and underserved communities often face unique challenges when it comes to accessing the benefits of urban forestry. Limited resources, inadequate green spaces, and a lack of educational opportunities about tree care and management can create disparities that affect these communities. We firmly believe that by prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion in our urban forestry initiatives, we can empower these communities to actively participate in decision-making processes, receive the support they deserve, and gain equal access to the numerous benefits of urban trees.

Equitable urban forestry practices are not only essential for addressing historical and systemic disparities but also for fostering a sense of ownership and pride within communities. By considering the needs and perspectives of marginalized and disadvantaged groups, we aim to mitigate environmental injustices and improve physical and mental health outcomes. Our goal is to create spaces that promote social cohesion and enhance the overall quality of life for all residents.

Diversity and inclusion are key pillars of OURCF's approach to urban forestry. By fostering a diverse workforce that includes arborists, foresters, and community engagement specialists from different backgrounds and cultures, we tap into a wealth of skills, perspectives, and cultural knowledge. This diversity drives innovative problem-solving, encourages creativity, and enables us to develop approaches that are culturally appropriate and responsive to the unique challenges faced by various communities. By reflecting the communities we serve, we build trust, break down barriers, and foster meaningful collaboration.

Underrepresented populations, including people of color, women, and individuals from low-income backgrounds, have historically been excluded from the forestry sector. At OURCF, we are committed to changing that. We actively create pathways for their participation and leadership in urban forestry, making our field more inclusive and representative. By doing so, we ensure that diverse voices and experiences shape the policies, practices, and projects that drive our work.

OURCF firmly believes that equity, diversity, and inclusion are not just ideals but fundamental principles that guide our urban forestry initiatives. By embracing DEI, we address historical inequities, engage communities in decision-making processes, and create sustainable and thriving urban forest environments throughout Southern Oregon. Together, we can build a more just and equitable future, where every Oregonian, regardless of their background, can enjoy the countless benefits that trees and green spaces provide.
